I would only ever have to re-rip everything if I wanted the HD audio, because when I rip, I only rip the lossy audio (usually DTS or DD), to save on space, though very little space is saved by doing this. Yes, it's stupid for network storage (I have a NAS with five 10TB drives in it), but in case you ever get a bigger screen, you won't have to re-rip and re-encode.
